Mobile Library Website Now Available!

Students can now browse the library catalog, place holds, renew items, see what they have checked out and search the library website on their cell phones! The Library Anywhere launched in August provides a mobile catalog that allows users to find books, CDs, DVDs on their web enabled mobile devices. It is also available as an app for iPhones, iPad, iPod Touch and Android Phones.
To get started, simply point your browser to

To install the Library Anywhere app on to your phone:
1. Search “libanywhere” on iTunes or Apple Store for iPhone and iPad
2. Search “LibraryAnywhere” for Android phone on Android Market

Staff Photography Show

SCC Art students display their best works at the Second Annual Student Art Show at the Library. Works created by students during the current academic year will be featured, including drawings, life drawings, traditional and experimental paintings, stained glass, fused glass, slumped glass, two-dimensional designs, three-dimensional designs, and digital art works.

Library hosted Ex-libris User Group Conference

The SCC Library hosted a successful Ex-libris User Group conference on Feb. 19, 2010. Thirty five librarians, library staff from 15 colleges in California, Arizona and Colorado as well as Getty Center, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, LA Law library and Aerospace Co. library participated in the event. SCC librarians Barbara Sproat and Anita Varela gave a presentation titled "Integrating Technology in Teaching Library Skills" to the group. Attendees were complimentary about the spacious, student-friendly facility.

MEEBO comes to SCC Library

You might notice the Meebo chat reference recently offered by the library. It's an online messaging tool for librarians to assist students online. The librarian would respond to Meebo messages from the students with links to articles, titles of books or other information. This allows students quick access to an information search specialist, without ever having to leave their seat! Meebo is great for sensitive topics where an in-person interview might be intimidating to the student or for the student who is multi-tasking at their computer.

The Library is sponsoring a Staff Photography Show featuring portraits, landscapes and travel photographs by photographers: John Smith, Terry Tomlinson, John Pacala, Julie Pearce, Rick Adams, Ej Bagdonas, Randy Scott, Edna Tse, Hao-Nhien Vu, Steven Deeley, Linda Dressler, Jim Watkins, Jim Doyle, Maria Chaidez, Eric Hovanitz and Annie Van Loon Kupfrian. The reception and viewing will be held on October 30th at the second floor gallery in the SCC Library.

Exhibit will remain open during regular Library hours from October 16 to December 12, 2008

NoodleBib Workshop

What is NoodleBib? It's not Chinese food! NoodleBib is a software tool that allows you to creat the MLA, APA or Chicago style bibliography. Do you need help using NoodleBib? Do you want to learn more about MLA format? A librarian will teach you all the secrets about NoodleBib in a 60-minute workshop on Nov. 19th, 20th at 12:30pm or 5:00 pm. The workshop will be held in the Library room 219.

Welcome back to the SCC Library! We're looking forward to assisting with your information needs this semester. If you're new to the library, you may need help locating materials, finding information or printing schedule/syllabus. Please ask librarians at Information Desk for help. If you want to get a library card, check out textbooks or verify your student ID, you can ask staff at the Circulation Desk for assistance. We received many new books, DVDs and music CDs recently. Be sure to browse the new books on the NEW BOOKS SHELF and new CDs/DVDs in the MEDIA. To expedite the check-out, you can use SELF CHECK to check out materials yourself. Wish you have a great semester!

Self-Check on the first floor

The Self-Check unit has been moved to downstairs next to the copy machine recently. In addition, a media self-check unit has been added for library users to check out music CDs and DVDs themselves.

The unit has a touch screen and step-by-step instructions. Give it a try or ask staff at Circulation Desk for assistance.

Martin Dugard visits SCC

Martin Dugard, the author of several New York Times bestsellers including Survivor, Chasing Lance, visited SCC on Tuesday, May 13. The program was sponsored by the Friends of the Library and Speaker Symposium. About 70 people attended the event.

Celebrating Faculty Writers

The SCC Library is hosting a Faculty Writers celebration event. The publications of the faculty members including Steve Reed, Alex Taber, Nick Magalousis, Corinna Evett, Denise Foley, Lynnette Beers, Bob Houska, Cari Cannon, Corinna Evett, John West, Nooshan Shekarabi, Regina Lamourelle & Arturo Barb-Mingo are currently on display in the Library lobby. A panel discussion will be held on Monday April 28th 2:30 in E 206. Freshments will be served.

Faculty Survey

In Fall 2007, the Library conducted an online faculty survey to review existing resources and services and to plan for the future. The Research Department analyzed the data and completed the report in January 2008. Based on the results of the 70 faculty members who responded to the survey, the majority of instuctors are satisfied with the resources and services provided by the SCC Library. The survey also assisted us identifying the needs and areas for improvement.

Book Discussion Group

The SCC Friends of the Library is forming a book discussion group. The book lovers will have an opportunity to read and discuss a particular book with other readers. The discussion will be lead by two SCC librarians who are experienced book discussion group leaders. The first meeting will be held on Feb. 26th, 2008, 2:00 -
3:00 pm in the SCC Library Rm 115. The first book to be discussed is The Zoo Keeper's Wife by Diane Ackerman.

Zookeeper's Wife

The SCC Book Group will be meeting at Library to discuss the book Zookeeper's Wife: a War Story by Diane Ackerman.

This is a true story as powerful as Shindler's List in which the director of the Warsaw Zoo and his wife Antonina sheltered 300 Jews as well as Polish resisters in their villa and in animal cages and sheds during the Nazi occupation of Poland. Using Antonina’s diaries and other sources, Ackerman takes us into the Warsaw ghetto and the 1943 Jewish uprising.

Join the SCC Book Group, Thursday November lst, noon to 1:00, at Faculty Development Center, L-115, to discuss this amazing book.

Meet Susan Patron

Susan Patron is a children's book author and 2007 winner of the Newbery Medal for The Higher Power Of Lucky. She will give a presentation to the Children Literature classes and Orange County librarians on Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 9:15 - 11:00 am at Santiago Canyon College Bldg. D 101. Her books are available for purchase at SCC Bookstore now. Don't miss this wonderful event.

Noted author Lisa See to visit SCC

Lisa See, the author of the international bestseller, "Snow flower and the secret fan", will be visiting SCC on Wednesday, September 26th at 1:00 pm. The Friends of SCC Library is hosting the lunch and program.
Lisa was born in Paris but grew up in Los Angeles, spending much of her time in Chinatown. Her first book "On Gold Mountain" was a national bestseller. The book traced the journey of Lisa's great grand father from his Chinese village to the United States, where he married a white woman and overcame the odds to become one of the richest Chinese people on "Gold Mountain", the Chinese name for the U.S.
Her new book "Peony in love" which is a tale of love and death in 17th century China was published in June 2007.

Japanese Tea Ceremony

The Library hosted a Japanese Tea Ceremony with Yeong Park lee, SCC students, serving tea to Dr. Deaver & his World Religions Class on Thursday, May 17th. A great deal of interest was shown by the many other students in the Library that morning.

Japanese Display

The Library is currently featuring a display on Japanese art and culture. Antique ceramics, Japanese dolls and a traditional kimono are featured. The exhibit also includes giclee (ink jet) prints of watercolor paintings by Art department Associate Professor Moira Hahn. Hahn’s works reference traditional “Ukiyo-e” prints from 19th century Japan. These traditional pictures of the “floating world” depict beautiful landscapes and courtesans of historic Japan. Hahn’s modern works are humorous interpretations imbued with historic visual elements and revised with contemporary Japanese cultural icons from manga and anime. A demonstration of a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony will be performed by SCC student Yeong Lee; date and time to be announced.

Book Discussion April 26

Library is sponsoring a book discussion this Thursday April 26th, 1:00 - 2:30 in the Faculty Development Center, Room 109. The History Professor, Steve Reed, will facilitate a discussion on the best selling title Team of Rivals: the Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln. Used Book Sale April 17-18

The SCC Friends of the Library are sponsoring a book sale to celebrate National Library Week. The book sale will be held April 17-18 (Tue - Wed) 9:00 - 2:00 pm in the A/B quad. Book lovers will be able to snag a bargain or two at the Book Sale. Regular adult paperbacks are priced at two for a dollar and hardbacks for up to $3.00.
